Our Story

Mukta Center for Yoga derives inspiration from Sanskrit Scholar and Yoga Master Swami Venkatesananda, whose unique, dynamic interpretive translations of Yoga texts, along with his innumerable talks, provides unparalleled insight into the ancient wisdom of yoga.

These ideas and practices are as relevant today as they were thousands of years ago. Mukta Center offers yoga events such as kirtan, courses and meditiation, as well as resources and ebooks.

Our Inspiration

Swami Venkatesananda

Swami Venkatesanda was a renowned sage, yogi, scholar, teacher and a chief disciple of the legendary master Swami Sivananda Maharaj of Rishikesh, India. Swami Venkatesananda served as Swami Sivananda’s personal secretary for 17 years.

A Sanskrit scholar, Swami Venkatasa translated sacred yoga scriptures including the Yoga Vasistha and the Yoga Sutras. Additionally, he wrote many books on yoga, and a large number of audio recordings of his talks are available, as wall as written compilations of his talks in book form. Swami Ventakesananda’s enlightening teachings continue to be sought by serious students of yoga throughout the world. 

Instructor

Geoff Barkley, PhD

Geoff Barkley has almost 40 years experience in clinical social work including private practice, psychiatry, substance abuse and health care. He is a yoga teacher who is deeply engaged with his yoga and meditation practice for over 50 years. His yoga master, Swami Venkatesananda, was a disciple of the great Swami Sivananda of Hrishekesha, India.

Geoff also studied yoga with Swami Vishnudevananda. Additionally, he practiced Sufism with Pir Vilayat Khan, Head of the Sufi Order in the West and Zen Meditation with Yoshin David Radin, a disciple of Joshu Sasaki Roshi. Geoff is a father of 4 grown sons and is happily married to his wife Anne who is also a yoga teacher. Geoff continues to practice and teach yoga.
