The Mukta Kirtan

Chanting simple Sanskrit phrases, which represent the various energies of life, assists in calming the mind and arriving at a joyful and peaceful space of awareness. While a description of the meaning of the chants is given, it’s really not even necessary as chanting seeks to reconnect you with the quieter spaces within.

The Mukta Kirtan offers by donation chanting, with proceeds going towards Grassroot Soccer, an African nonprofit promoting HIV/Aids prevention and adolescent mental health.

Instructor

Geoff Barkley, PhD

Geoff has a Master’s in Social Work and a PhD in Educational Research (investigating the root causes of the current health crisis in the West and how to alleviate this through prevention). For over forty years, Geoff has counseled clients in a wide variety of settings: in a holistic private practice, in psychiatric and substance abuse settings and in diverse health care facilities: cancer clinics, trauma and stroke units and senior care facilities.

Geoff taught yoga and meditation classes for many years. He has studied with Swami Vishnudevananda, Sufi Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan and Zen Roshin David Radin. His yoga master, Swami Venkatesananda, was a direct disciple of the world-renowned Swami Sivananda of Hrishesha, India.

Geoff has spent decades assimilating and then integrating the teachings of yoga and psychology into a practical, yet transformative, life approach.

Geoff also leads chanting as part of the Mutkta Kirtan. Chanting has been an important part of his life for over 50 years, and recently he has moved into more actively offering kirtans in his region.

Geoff has four grown sons and is happily married to Anne, a photographer and advanced Iyengar yoga instructor.
